About Diplacus rattanii (A.Gray) G.L.Nesom
Diplacus rattanii is an annual herb that reaches between 1 and 18 centimeters in height. Its oval leaves are arranged oppositely and can grow up to 4.6 centimeters long; newer leaves have a hairy texture. This plant's flowers are no longer than 1 centimeter, with a tubular base enclosed in a swollen, ribbed calyx made of hairy sepals. The flowers are magenta, and they often have yellow markings in the flower mouth. Diplacus rattanii is endemic to California, and it occurs only in the state's North and Central Coast Ranges. It grows in open, disturbed habitat types, including rock outcrops and areas that were recently cleared by wildfire.
