About Diphasiastrum sitchense (Rupr.) Holub
Diphasiastrum sitchense, commonly known as the Sitka clubmoss, is a species of pteridophyte native to northern North America and northeastern Asia. This terrestrial herb spreads via stolons that grow along the ground surface, or just slightly below it. Its leaves are appressed and broadly lanceolate, reaching up to 3.2 mm (0.13 inches) in length. Strobili grow singly at the tips of its shoots. The species has been recorded in every Canadian province, plus the U.S. states of Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York. It also grows in Greenland, St. Pierre and Miquelon, Yukon, Japan, and the Kamchatka Peninsula of Asiatic Russia. It can be found growing in alpine meadows, open rocky barrens, and coniferous woodlands.
