This species of grass, Digitaria cognata (Schult.) Pilg., is a perennial that does not grow rhizomes. It has shallow roots. Its erect stems can reach up to 56 centimeters in height, and the bases of the stems are tough and covered in hairs. Its leaves grow up to 12.6 centimeters long, and are narrow; one side of the leaf is wavy, while the other side is smooth. Its inflorescence is a purple-tinged panicle that bears single-flowered spikelets. This grass provides grazing for livestock and wild ungulates, and its seeds are eaten by birds.
