Growth Form
Like all species in the subfamily Didiereoideae, Didierea madagascariensis Baill. is a semi-succulent woody plant that grows as a shrub or small tree. It is densely covered in spines and can reach up to 10 metres (33 feet) in height.

Its spines are arranged in whorls, most commonly consisting of four spines each.
