About Dianthus alpinus L.
Dianthus alpinus, commonly called alpine pink, is a species of flowering plant in the family Caryophyllaceae. This species is endemic to the Alps of Eastern Austria, specifically growing in the north-eastern limestone Alps of Austria between the Totes Gebirge in the west and Semmering and Schneeberg in the east. It is a calcicole species. It is a mat-forming herbaceous perennial that reaches a short height of 2 to 10 centimeters. Its leaves range from linear to lanceolate in shape, measuring 15 to 25 millimeters long and 2 to 5 millimeters wide. Its flowers are deep cerise pink with white spots, and they bloom from June to August. When cultivated in the United Kingdom, Dianthus alpinus has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. For cultivation, it needs a well-drained site in full sun, such as a rock garden, and it can be short-lived when grown in cultivation.
