About Diaethria anna (Guérin-Méneville, 1844)
Diaethria anna, also called Anna's eighty-eight or Finita Burrasca, is a butterfly that lives in wet tropical forests in Middle America. Rarely, stray individuals can be found in south Texas. The upperside of its wings is dark brown, with a metallic bluish-green band on the forewings. The underside of the forewings is red, followed by a wide black band and white tips. The underside of the hindwings is white, with lines that form a black-outlined shape close to "88", which gives the species its common name. The markings can occasionally look more like "98" or "89" instead. The caterpillars feed on tropical plants in the Ulmaceae and Sapindaceae plant families. Adult butterflies feed on rotting fruit and dung. This species has two recognized subspecies: Diaethria anna anna and Diaethria anna salvadorensis.
