About Deudorix dinochares Grose-Smith, 1887
Deudorix dinochares, commonly known as the apricot playboy, is a butterfly species that belongs to the Lycaenidae family. This species is distributed across South Africa, Madagascar, Zimbabwe, eastern Africa, and south-west Arabia. Within South Africa, its range extends from northern KwaZulu-Natal into Eswatini, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, North West, and Gauteng. Males of this species have a wingspan of 24–30 mm, while females have a slightly larger wingspan of 26–32 mm. Adult apricot playboy butterflies are active year-round, with flight activity peaking from September to October and again from March to May. The larvae of Deudorix dinochares feed on the fruit of a wide variety of plant species. These include Combretum species (specifically C. zeyheri), Burkea species (specifically B. africana), Syzygium species (specifically S. cordatum), Gardenia species (specifically G. volkensii and G. neuberia), as well as Pseudolachnostylis maprouneifolia, Acacia species (specifically A. stenocarpa), Dolichos, Lablab, Schotea, Macadamia, Coffea, Quisqualis, Schotia, Tamarindus, Vigna, Psidium, Prunus, and Ximenia species.
