About Denhamia silvestris (Lander & L.A.S.Johnson) M.P.Simmons
Denhamia silvestris (Lander & L.A.S.Johnson) M.P.Simmons is most commonly found as a dense, dark green shrub that grows to two metres tall. Occasionally, it can reach heights of 10 to 15 m (33 to 49 ft), with a trunk diameter up to 25 cm (9.8 in). Its trunk is crooked and misshapen, and does not form buttresses. The outer bark is greyish-brown or grey, with a fairly smooth texture marked by lenticels. Inner living bark shows green, brown, and reddish colours; exposed bark gives this species its common name "orange bark". Leaves are 10 to 80 mm (0.39 to 3.15 in) long and 2 to 13 mm (0.08 to 0.51 in) wide, with a shape ranging from narrow lanceolate to ovate. Leaf edges curve downward, and may be toothed or entire. The leaf tip is sometimes curved, and the leaf base tapers gradually, ending in a narrow petiole attachment. Leaf stalks are 2 to 5 mm (0.08 to 0.20 in) long. Leaf venation is visible on both leaf surfaces, with 5 to 8 pairs of lateral veins. Leaflets are lenticellate, slender, smooth, and coloured dark reddish-brown or grey. New shoots have a soft, downy texture.
