About Dendromecon harfordii Kellogg

Dendromecon harfordii Kellogg is a shrub or small tree that grows 2 to 6 metres (6.6 to 19.7 ft) tall. It produces thin branching stems sparsely covered with smooth-edged, oval leaves that are 3 to 8 centimeters long. The plant bears showy flowers with four bright yellow petals, each 2 to 3 centimeters long. Its fruit is a curved, cylindrical capsule that is more than 7 centimeters in length. This plant is endemic to the Channel Islands of California, where it occurs on San Clemente Island, Santa Catalina Island, Santa Cruz Island, and Santa Rosa Island. It grows in California coastal sage and chaparral habitats on these islands. Dendromecon harfordii is cultivated as an ornamental plant. It is planted in native plant gardens, drought tolerant gardens, wildlife gardens, and natural landscaping projects.
