It is classified under the subgenus Hybomidium Shipp, 1897, and is distributed in the southeastern United States. A variety of this taxon, D. gibbosum var. sublaeve, originally described by Henry Walter Bates in 1887, has been reclassified as the separate species D. sublaeve by González-Alvarado and Vaz-de-Mello.
