About Daviesia squarrosa Sm.
Daviesia squarrosa is a slender shrub that typically grows to a height of up to 1.5 m (4 ft 11 in), and has short, bristly hairs on its branchlets. Its phyllodes are crowded, heart-shaped or egg-shaped, 4โ12 mm (0.16โ0.47 in) long and 0.5โ10 mm (0.020โ0.394 in) wide, with a long, tapering tip. The flowers are arranged singly or in pairs in leaf axils, on a 0.5โ1 mm (0.020โ0.039 in) long peduncle, with each flower borne on a 3.5โ12 mm (0.14โ0.47 in) long pedicel. The sepals are 2.5โ3.0 mm (0.098โ0.118 in) long and joined at the base, the upper two lobes are joined for most of their length, and the lower three lobes are 0.5โ1 mm (0.020โ0.039 in) long. The standard petal is egg-shaped, yellow with red markings and a bright yellow centre, 5.5โ5.6 mm (0.22โ0.22 in) long and 6.6โ7.2 mm (0.26โ0.28 in) wide. The wings are 4.5โ5.5 mm (0.18โ0.22 in) long and red, sometimes with a yellow tip; the keel is about 4.5 mm (0.18 in) long and red, sometimes with a yellow tip. Flowering occurs between July and October, and the fruit is a flattened triangular pod 6โ9 mm (0.24โ0.35 in) long. This pea species grows in forest, mainly in near-coastal areas, ranging from south-east Queensland to the Tuross River in New South Wales, and also occurs as far inland as the Megalong Valley and Goulburn.
