About Daphnandra apatela Schodde

Daphnandra apatela is a medium to large tree that sometimes grows over 30 metres tall, with a trunk that can reach up to 75 cm in diameter. Its horizontal branches grow into a dense crown. The base of the stem is sometimes flanged, but is not buttressed. The bark is grey, somewhat rough, and marked with raised corky bumps. This bark contains alkaloids that produce an effect similar to strychnine, though the effect is milder. Small branches are covered in downy hairs, and are flattened at the point where they connect to the main branches. A ball-and-socket type joint forms where larger branchlets join the main stem.
