About Danaus melanippus (Cramer)
Danaus melanippus is a butterfly species that has common names including black veined tiger, white tiger, common tiger, and eastern common tiger. It is a member of the danaine group, commonly called "crows and tigers", which falls within the brush-footed butterflies family. This species occurs in tropical Asia. Its distribution ranges from Assam in eastern India, through Southeast Asia, south to Indonesia, and extends eastward to the Philippines, before continuing through southern China to Taiwan. Around 17 subspecies of Danaus melanippus are currently recognized. Its closest relative is the Malay tiger, Danaus affinis.
