About Danae racemosa (L.) Moench
Danae is a monotypic genus of flowering plants, meaning it contains only one species: Danae racemosa (L.) Moench. This species is native to West Asia. It is a slow-growing evergreen shrub that reaches around 60 cm in diameter, and it has two common names: Alexandrian laurel and poet's laurel. In the APG III classification system, the genus Danae is placed in the family Asparagaceae, subfamily Convallarioideae; this subfamily was formerly treated as the separate family Ruscaceae. This plant favors shade, and is grown in cultivation primarily for its elegant, glossy green foliage. After it produces small greenish flowers, red berries develop. Danae racemosa has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit, a status that was confirmed in 2017. Studies on rats have found that both the hydro-methanolic extract from this plant's leaves, and two flavonoids isolated from this extract, show anti-nociceptive properties.
