About Cyrtostylis reniformis R.Br.
Cyrtostylis reniformis R.Br., commonly known as the common gnat-orchid, is a terrestrial, perennial, deciduous herb. It produces a single kidney-shaped, heart-shaped, or almost round leaf that measures 15โ40 mm (0.6โ2 in) long and 10โ30 mm (0.4โ1 in) wide. Up to eight flowers, most often dark reddish brown and rarely yellowish, grow on a flowering stem 50โ150 mm (2โ6 in) high. Each individual flower is 11โ14 mm (0.4โ0.6 in) long. The dorsal sepal is erect, curves forward, and is shaped from linear to lance-shaped; it measures 11.5โ13 mm (0.5โ0.5 in) long and about 2 mm (0.08 in) wide. The lateral sepals are linear, 10โ11 mm (0.4โ0.4 in) long, about 1 mm (0.04 in) wide, and curve either forwards or downwards. The petals match the lateral sepals in size and shape, and curve downwards. The labellum is oblong, 10โ12.5 mm (0.4โ0.5 in) long and about 5 mm (0.20 in) wide. It is shelf-like, with a few serrations near its pointed tip. Flowering occurs from May to October. This orchid is widespread and locally common across all Australian states and the Australian Capital Territory, with the exception of Western Australia, where it does not occur.
