About Cyrestis acilia Godart, 1819

Cyrestis acilia can be recognized at a glance by two key features: a very broad white median band that tapers toward both the forewing costa and the hindwing anal margin, and unusually vivid, extensive orange coloring in the anal area of the hindwing. This is the only Cyrestis species where the row of ocelli on the forewing’s submarginal band becomes obsolete in the middle. The band itself only has very faint yellow borders, and of the six ocelli typical for this genus group, only 3 to 4 are distinctly developed here. An additional trait occurs at the apex of the hindwing: proximal to the uppermost ocellus, the line running along the inner border of the ocelli row is yellow, rather than black-brown. On the hindwing, the second and third ocelli counting from the anal angle are distinctly elongated and reniform, and this shape is especially visible on the under surface. The anal ocellus is round, the reversed ocellus is distinct, and the anal projection is quite insignificant. Females of this species are not at all scarce. They are somewhat larger than males, and have lighter, more faded colouration. This fading is especially noticeable in the anal area of the hindwing, where the orange colour becomes quite faded and speckled with brownish tones.
