Cyperus lupulinus (Biehler) Marcks is a perennial herb that grows up to 50 centimeters tall. It spreads via underground rhizomes, and its culms have a triangular cross-section. The species' spikes are densely packed into a roughly spherical clump. Its achenes are dark brown, nearly black, egg-shaped, and measure about 2 millimeters across.
