About Cyperus gymnocaulos Steud.
Cyperus gymnocaulos Steud. is a rhizomatous, perennial, grass-like sedge with a tufted growth habit. It typically reaches a height of 0.35 to 1 metre (1.1 to 3.3 ft), and blooms between July and March to produce brown flowers. This species usually has a short thick rhizome, with smooth, trigonous, terete culms. Its leaves are mostly reduced to sheaths, and only juvenile plants produce fully formed leaves. Cyperus gymnocaulos is usually smaller and less robust than Cyperus vaginatus. This species grows in swamps, along creeks, rivers and other damp locations across all states of mainland Australia and the Northern Territory. In Western Australia it occurs in the Mid West, Wheatbelt, South West and Goldfields-Esperance regions, where it grows in sandy-clay soils. First Nations peoples sometimes use this species in net making.
