About Cyperus exaltatus Retz.
Cyperus exaltatus Retz. is a species of sedge native to parts of Africa, Asia, Argentina, and Australia. It was first formally described in 1788 by Anders Jahan Retzius. This plant grows in shallow water, along the edges of streams, and on the edges of lakes. In Korea, this species is known locally as Wanggol (왕골), and it has been cultivated as a crop across all regions of the country. It is specifically grown in rice fields. The interior of its stem is composed of colorless cells separated by large gaps, which gives the stem a high level of elasticity. After splitting and drying, the stems are used to make seats, cushions, and hats. Dried inner stem material is used to produce shoes, baskets, and ropes. The leaves of Cyperus exaltatus are also used in papermaking.
