It is native to tropical and subtropical wetlands across a wide range of regions: sub-Saharan Africa, Asia (including India, Indochina, China, Indonesia, the Philippines, and other areas), Madagascar, New Guinea, Australia, Latin America stretching from Mexico to Argentina, the West Indies, the southeastern United States (Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina), and multiple oceanic islands.
