About Cyperus capitatus Vand.
This is an easily recognizable species of Cyperus that grows in coastal sands. It spreads via scaly underground roots that grow beneath sand. Most of its leaves grow at the base of the stem; these leaves are large, thick, blue-grey, and U-shaped, and often include both broad and narrowly curled forms. Bracts located beneath the flowers resemble the plant's leaves, but have widened bases. The plant's flowers are arranged into a single clustered head of spikelets. The glumes of its florets are large and broad, measuring 5-8 mm by 2.5-4 mm, have membranous edges, and feature a distinct pointed tip, with the mucro measuring 1-3 mm. This species is found in Mediterranean coastal sands, dunes, and slacks, as well as on some nearby coasts. Confirmed locations include Albania, Algeria, the Balearic Islands, Bulgaria, the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, Corsica, Cyprus, the East Aegean Islands, Egypt, France, Greece, Italy, Crete, Lebanon-Syria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, North Caucasus, Palestine, Portugal, Sardinia, Sicily, Sinai, Spain, Tunisia, Turkey, Turkey in Europe, Western Sahara, and Yugoslavia.
