About Cycnia oregonensis Stretch

Cycnia oregonensis Stretch is a moth species belonging to the family Erebidae. This species is widespread across most of North America, occurring from coast to coast, ranging north from the Mexican border to central Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia. The forewings of adult individuals measure 19–20 mm in length. Across nearly all of the species' range, adult moths show very little variation in color and pattern, appearing almost uniformly colored. One named subspecies, Cycnia oregonensis tristis, occurs only in a small area near Olympia, Washington. This is the only confirmed population of this species found in Washington state west of the Cascade Range. This subspecies is distinctly grayer and has less distinct patterning than all other populations of the species. The larvae of Cycnia oregonensis feed on plants from the genus Apocynum.
