The species was originally described by Francis Walker, with the scientific name currently dated to 1865 in its authority citation. It occurs on Borneo, Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi, the Moluccas, New Guinea, Taiwan, and Luzon in the Philippines. In Australia, it has been recorded from the Northern Territory and Queensland.
