About Cucullia speyeri Lintner, 1874

Cucullia speyeri, with common names Speyer's paint, Speyer's cucullia, and Speyer's hooded owlet moth, is a species of moth that occurs in North America. Its distribution ranges from Alberta and Montana to the Atlantic coast of North America, spanning from New Hampshire to Virginia. This species was first described by Joseph Albert Lintner in 1874. In the U.S. state of Connecticut, Cucullia speyeri is classified as a species of special concern, and it is believed to have been extirpated from the state. This moth occupies habitats including open meadows, dry grasslands, and native prairies. The wingspan of adult Cucullia speyeri is approximately 48 millimeters (1.9 inches). Adult moths are active during late spring and summer. The larvae of this species feed on herbaceous species in the family Asteraceae, as well as species from the genus Conyza.
