About Cucullia lucifuga (Denis & Schiffermüller), 1775
Cucullia lucifuga, first described by Denis & Schiffermüller in 1775, is a species of moth in the family Noctuidae. This moth can be found across northern, central, and southern Europe, with its range extending eastward to Japan. It is also present in the regions of Tibet and Armenia. The wingspan of adult Cucullia lucifuga ranges from 38 to 55 mm. In the northern parts of its range, this moth produces one generation per year, and adult moths are active on the wing from May to June. In warmer southern regions, there is a full second generation of adults active from July to August, plus a partial third generation whose adults appear in October. The larvae of Cucullia lucifuga feed on a variety of species in the Asteraceae family, also known as Compositae. Documented host species include Tussilago farfara, Petasites paradoxus, Cirsium arvense, Centaurea phrygia, Sonchus arvensis, Hieracium umbellatum, and multiple species in the Taraxacum genus.
