About Cucullia asteris (Denis & Schiffermüller), 1775

This is the technical description and variation of Cucullia asteris, referred to here as C. asteris Schiff (27 e). The forewing is pale grey, with a dull reddish brown costal area. The cell and the space beyond the cell have a rufous tinge. The stigmata are obscure, and are incompletely defined by brown; the reniform stigma has a dark curved streak at its lower end. The outer line is only defined below vein 2 on the submedian fold, where it forms a double red-brown lunule. This double lunule is followed by a white lunule, beyond which lies a thick brown blotch or two separate streaks. Both the inner and outer lines are marked by very oblique dark brown streaks on the inner margin. The hindwing is brownish, and its basal half is dull whitish grey with dark veins. The larva is yellow green, with yellow dorsal, subdorsal, and spiracular lines that have black edges. The larval head is yellow brown with black spots. The species has a wingspan of 45–52 mm.
