This species of fern has the scientific name Cryptogramma stelleri (S.G.Gmel.) Prantl. It is commonly known by several names: slender cliff-brake, fragile rock-brake, slender rock-brake, and Steller's rockbrake. Cryptogramma stelleri occurs naturally in North America. Across parts of its North American range, it carries official conservation status rankings: it is listed as endangered in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania; listed as threatened in Maine and New Hampshire; classified as exploitably vulnerable in the state of New York; and categorized as sensitive in the state of Washington. This species is documented to be capable of growing using artificial light in locations that have no natural light, an example of such a location is Crystal Cave in Wisconsin.
