About Crypsiphona ocultaria (Donovan, 1805)

Crypsiphona ocultaria, which has been erroneously referred to as Phalaena occultaria Guenée, 1857, is commonly known as the red-lined looper moth or red-lined geometer. It is a moth species belonging to the family Geometridae. This species was first described by Edward Donovan in 1805, and it is found across Australia, where it is one of the most common moth species present. The 'red-lined' portion of its common name comes from the red markings visible on the undersides of its wings. The adult moth has a wingspan ranging from 4 to 5 cm, and both sexes look very similar in appearance. When threatened, the grub (larva) holds still to mimic a stick. Mature larvae are bluish-green in color, with an off-white line running along their sides, and they feed exclusively on eucalypt leaves.
