Among the Zuni people, this plant has several documented uses. A decoction made from the plant is taken to treat sick stomach, and it is also used as a purgative and a diuretic. An infusion of the plant is taken for stomachaches, syphilis, and gonorrhea. Before sucking out snakebite venom, a Zuni medicine man chews the fresh or dried root of this plant, and a poultice made from the root is applied to the snakebite wound.
