About Croton capitatus Michx.

Croton capitatus Michx., commonly called hogwort, woolly croton, or goatweed, is an annual plant. It has erect, branched stems that are densely covered in light brown, woolly hairs; these hairs give the plant a whitish overall appearance. It grows in dry, open locations, and particularly thrives in sandy and rocky soils. This species is distributed throughout the eastern United States. Hogwort acts as a host plant for the goatweed leafwing butterfly, Anaea andria.
