About Crithagra scotops Sundevall, 1850

The forest canary, scientifically named Crithagra scotops Sundevall, 1850, is a finch species that belongs to the family Fringillidae. It is native to South Africa and Eswatini. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest, and subtropical or tropical moist montane forest. Previously, this species was classified under the genus Serinus. However, phylogenetic analysis that used mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequences determined that the genus Serinus was polyphyletic. As a result, the genus was split, and the forest canary, along with many other species, was moved to the resurrected genus Crithagra.
