About Crithagra leucopygia Sundevall, 1850

The white-rumped seedeater, with the scientific name Crithagra leucopygia, is a finch species that belongs to the family Fringillidae. It is distributed across the Sahel and the eastern portion of the Sudan region. Its natural habitat is dry savanna. Outside of its native range and in aviculture, this species is commonly known as the grey singing finch. This species was previously classified in the genus Serinus. However, phylogenetic analysis that used both mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequences found that the genus Serinus was polyphyletic. As a result, the original genus was split, and this species along with multiple others were moved to the resurrected genus Crithagra, which was first described by Swainson in 1827.
