About Crithagra leucoptera Sharpe, 1871
The protea canary (Crithagra leucoptera Sharpe, 1871) measures 15 to 16 cm in length, and has a large pale bill. Adult individuals have grey-brown upperparts, a black chin, a white throat, and two thin buff wing bars. Their underparts are buff with light streaking. Males and females of this species look similar, while young birds have heavier streaking on their underparts than adults. The protea canary's call is either a trilled tree-lee-loo or a sweet sound. Its song is a loud medley of warbles and trills that includes extensive mimicry. This species is an endemic resident breeder restricted to Western Cape Province, South Africa. It inhabits mature protea scrub, tangled valley thickets, and mountain forests within Western Cape Province, and its range does not extend to the coast.
