About Crithagra dorsostriata Reichenow, 1887

The white-bellied canary, scientifically named Crithagra dorsostriata, is a finch species belonging to the family Fringillidae. This species can be found in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda, and its natural habitat is dry savanna. Formerly, the white-bellied canary was classified in the genus Serinus. However, phylogenetic analysis conducted with mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequences revealed that the genus Serinus was polyphyletic. As a result, the genus was split, and multiple species including the white-bellied canary were moved to the resurrected genus Crithagra.
