About Crataegus succulenta Schrad. ex Link

Crataegus succulenta Schrad. ex Link is a species of hawthorn, commonly called fleshy hawthorn, succulent hawthorn, and round-fruited cockspurthorn. It has been called the most wide-ranging hawthorn in North America. It is native to a large portion of southern Canada, and extends through the United States as far south as Arizona, New Mexico, Kansas, Missouri, North Carolina, and Tennessee. Across this broad range, there are many variant forms that have previously been assigned their own species names, but these are now also treated as synonyms of this species. Researchers think that along with Crataegus crus-galli, C. succulenta is a parent species of the tetraploid hawthorn Crataegus persimilis. The fruit of C. succulenta is edible, and can be made into jelly, or crushed to prepare tea.
