About Crataegus phaenopyrum (L.fil.) Borkh.

Crataegus phaenopyrum is a species of hawthorn commonly known by the common names Washington hawthorn or Washington thorn. This species is native to the mid-eastern United States, and it is widely grown as an ornamental plant. Mature individuals can reach a height of 10 meters, which is approximately 32 feet. This hawthorn produces small red, berry-like fruits that grow in large, dense clusters. These fruits serve as a food source for squirrels and birds. The fruits have a mild flavor, are edible, and can be consumed either raw or cooked. Edible fruits of this species can also be processed into jelly, or crushed to make tea. Like wood from other hawthorn species, the wood of Crataegus phaenopyrum is hard, and can be used to make tools.
