About Cosmos caudatus Kunth

Scientific name: Cosmos caudatus Kunth. This species has several unlisted vernacular names used in Central America. The plant can grow up to 2 meters (6 feet 7 inches) tall. Its leaves are soft and pungent, while its stem is light green with a purplish hue and has a succulent texture. As night falls, the leaves fold to close the terminal buds, in a behavior that can be described as the plant literally sleeping. Its flowers grow either solitary or in loose clusters, and are produced on a single stalk growing from auxiliary heads.
