About Cosmia diffinis (Linnaeus, 1767)

This species, Cosmia diffinis (Linnaeus, 1767), has forewings with a rich red-brown coloration over a pinkish grey base. It can be distinguished from other species in the genus Cosmia by its wing lines starting from broad white costal blotches, rather than narrow streaks. Its hindwing is paler and more olive brown than that of Cosmia affinis. Two named aberrations are recognized. The aberration ab. confinis H. Schaff. has predominantly pinkish ground colour, pale golden brown shading, and occasionally yellowish hindwings marked with a dark outline and dark submarginal shade. In contrast, the aberration ab. affinis Hbn. has more intense, darker deep purple tints, and individuals of this form are slightly smaller on average. The larva resembles the larva of C. affinis. The species has a wingspan of 29–35 mm.
