About Corybas vitreus Lehnebach

Corybas vitreus Lehnebach is a terrestrial, seasonal orchid. It produces a single heart-shaped leaf with smooth entire margins, and bears a single flower when it blooms. Its flowering height ranges from 14 to 30 mm, and the central portion of the flower is mostly translucent. This species closely resembles Corybas walliae, but can be distinguished by its translucent labellum lamina that has a dark maroon to purple band running along the lateral margin. It differs from Corybas trilobus by having a broadly ovate flower. Corybas vitreus flowers between September and October, and fruits from November to early January. This orchid is endemic to New Zealand, occurring in the southern part of the North Island and across the South Island. It grows at altitudes from 600 to 1300 m, found in beech and Kunzea forests, where it grows in leaf litter.
