About Cortinarius ohlone Bojantchev
Cortinarius ohlone is a basidiomycete mushroom belonging to the genus Cortinarius. It is found in California, and was formally described as a new species to science in 2013 by Dimitar Bojantchev. The specific epithet ohlone honors the Ohlone, a Native American people of California, who historically inhabited the oak woodland where the type specimen of this mushroom was collected. This mushroom has a brownish cap that grows up to 8 centimetres (3+1โ4 inches) wide, and its gills are tannish in color. The stem reaches a maximum length of 10 cm (4 in) and a maximum thickness of 2 cm (3โ4 in). It produces a rusty brown spore print. The flesh of the cap is brown, while the flesh of the stem is whitish. It is similar to many other species that belong to Cortinarius subgenus Telamonia. Between December and January, this species can be found growing on the ground under oak trees, ranging from Butte County to southern California.
