It is native to eastern Canada (including Quebec, Ontario, and New Brunswick) and much of the United States, particularly the south-central region of the country such as Oklahoma and Arkansas. This species is widely cultivated in China and has become naturalized there. Coreopsis grandiflora is a perennial herb that can sometimes grow taller than 60 cm (2 feet). It produces both yellow ray flowers and yellow disc flowers. Its native natural habitats include prairies, glades, open woods, thickets, roadsides, and open ground. The Latin specific epithet grandiflora translates to large-flowered. This plant attracts bees and butterflies. In the United Kingdom, the cultivar 'Early Sunrise' has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
