About Coreopsis calliopsidea (DC.) A.Gray
Coreopsis calliopsidea (DC.) A.Gray, also referred to as Leptosyne calliopsidea, is an annual herb. It produces one or more stems that grow up to approximately 40 centimeters (16 inches) tall, and may sometimes grow even taller. Its slightly fleshy leaves are mostly found clustered around the base of the stem, and each leaf is divided into multiple narrow lobes. The inflorescence is made up of a single flower head, which features a bell-shaped involucre composed of triangular phyllaries. The center of the flower head holds up to 50 tiny yellow disc florets, surrounded by a fringe that usually consists of 8 bright yellow ray florets. Each ray floret can grow up to 3.5 centimeters (1.4 inches) long. The fruit produced by this plant is an achene. The achene from a ray floret is oval-shaped and hairless, and it has no pappus. In comparison, the achene from a disc floret is more slender, shiny, edged with hairs, and tipped with a pappus made of scales.
