About Corallorhiza odontorhiza (Willd.) Nutt.
Corallorhiza odontorhiza (Willd.) Nutt., commonly known as fall coral-root or small-flowered coral-root, is a species of orchid. It is widespread across eastern and central United States, and has also been reported from Mexico, Central America, Quebec, and Ontario. In North America, it grows in forested areas at elevations up to 2800 m (9300 feet). This species is non-photosynthetic and produces no chlorophyll, so it relies on soil fungi to provide it with nutrients. Its stems range from yellow to brown and are bulbous at the base. The plant has no leaves. Its flowers are typically reddish-purple with a white lip marked by small purple spots, though some individual plants are cleistogamous and bear non-opening flowers. In the eastern United States, this plant flowers from August through October.
