It is most often found growing in riparian forest or shrubland located on alluvial soils. Mature Coprosma rubra can reach up to 4 metres in height, and has red-brown bark and slender branches. Its fruit is yellowish-white, oblong in shape, and can grow up to 6 millimetres long.
