About Conistra ligula (Esper, 1791)

Conistra ligula (Esper, 1791) has forewings that measure 13–15 mm in length. Its forewings are deep red brown or purplish brown, darker than the forewings of Conistra vaccinii. A pale grey or brownish grey submarginal band crosses the forewing, and the spots that form the submarginal line sit on this band. The lines, edges of the stigmata, and often the veins are pale. The hindwings are brownish fuscous. Distinguishing characteristics for this species include the dark brown or red-brown base colour of the forewings, the pale subterminal fascia, and the brown fuscous hindwings. This species is distributed across western, central and southern Europe. In western Europe, it is absent from many parts of Scotland and the western part of Ireland. In central Europe, it is absent from the German North Sea coast, Denmark, all wooded areas of Fennoscandia, the northern Baltic countries, and central and northern Russia. It also does not occur on many Mediterranean islands. In North Africa, it can be found in Morocco. Further east, its range extends into northern Iraq, Turkey and Armenia.
