About Commelina forskaolii Vahl

Commelina forskaolii Vahl, sometimes called rat's ear, is an herbaceous plant that belongs to the dayflower family. It is native to large portions of Africa, Arabia, and India, and has been introduced to Florida in the United States. Across most of its native range, it is classified as a common species. This plant can be easily identified by its bright blue flowers, which have winged stamen filaments. Its seeds are also distinct, with noticeable irregular ridges running along their sides. It frequently grows into dense mats, and occurs most often in sandy soils in locations that receive at least a moderate amount of sunlight. Due to its hardiness and its ability to produce cleistogamous flowers, Commelina forskaolii is considered a weed in many regions.
