This species was first formally described by Michael Denis and Ignaz Schiffermüller in 1775. It can be found across Europe and the Near East. In England and Wales, it has a scattered distribution, and it is not present in Scotland and Ireland. In the southern Alps, this moth can be found at elevations up to 1000 metres. It mainly inhabits oak forests.
