Collinsia heterophylla Buist ex Graham is an annual plant that grows in shady areas. It reaches a height of 10 to 50 centimetres (4 to 20 inches). It occurs across most of California, excluding desert regions, at elevations below approximately 1,000 metres (3,300 feet). Its blooming period runs from mid-spring to early summer. Like other species in the genus Collinsia, which includes the blue-eyed Marys, this species gets its name from its inflorescence towers that decrease in diameter. When in full flower, this structure gives the plant a distinct resemblance to a pagoda. When air-dried, each individual seed of this plant weighs about 1 mg.
