About Colchicum cupanii Guss.

Colchicum cupanii Guss. is a widespread flowering plant species in the family Colchicaceae, commonly called the Mediterranean meadow saffron. It grows across much of the central Mediterranean Basin, and has been recorded in France, Sardinia, Italy, Albania, Greece, Montenegro, Croatia, Sicily, Algeria, Malta, and Tunisia. This species is quite variable: some individual plants produce flowers that open fully into a star shape, while others keep a cup-shaped form. Its small pink to purple, non-tessellated flowers reach up to 3 cm (1 inch) in diameter, and grow in large numbers during the fall. Its foliage also emerges in the fall.
