About Colchicum bulbocodium Ker Gawl.

Colchicum bulbocodium, commonly known as spring meadow saffron, is an alpine bulbous plant species. It is native to mountain ranges across Europe, stretching from the Pyrenees to the Caucasus, and can be found in Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, Romania, the former Yugoslavia, Ukraine, and southern European Russia. This species is grown as an ornamental plant in many locations. Its flowers are considered ideal for rock gardens, and the plant looks beautiful when planted in large groups. It is a hardy spring-flowering bulb that stays very small, reaching only about 7 to 10 cm in height. Strap-shaped leaves and pink-to-purple, crocus-like flowers emerge from April to June; these flowers are 3–8 cm in diameter. Like all species in the genus Colchicum, Colchicum bulbocodium is a poisonous plant.
